Immediately after gaining its independence from the totalitarian Soviet state, Ukraine's economy plunged, leaving many of its citizens in poverty conditions. Parents, unable to feed their children, sent them to school hungry. The UNWLA instituted the "Milk and Roll" (Moloko i bulochka) program to help the young students start the school day after a healthy breakfast. The program continues today primarily in rural schools where the poverty is greatest. |
