The Manor College Ukrainian Heritage Studies Center together with Branch 88 UNWLA and the Manorly Bead Club present the world renowned children's tale The Mitten, in a Ukrainian Christmas display, at the Pearl S. Buck House Festival of Trees. The Christmas tree exhibit runs now through December 31, 2011.
Pearl S. Buck House celebrates the holidays by decorating the estate house. With over a dozen trees, beautifully decorated by community organizations, the House is something to experience during the festive season. Tours are conducted during the Festival of Trees, Tuesday through Saturday at 11, 12, 1,2, and 3 and on Sunday at 12, 1, 2, and 3. There is an admission fee of $9/Adults, $8/Seniors and Students.
Last year Manor's exhibit at the Pearl S. Buck Festival of Trees, A Ukrainian Christmas won first prize!!
The Mitten display organizers are thankful to Luba Chornodolsky for her inspiring story telling, and animal characters; and to Lydia Dychdala (Manor '55) for making the delightful Ukrainian children's costumes. The scenes on display plus the Christmas tree ornaments convey the magic of The Mitten and evoke both awe and humor.
The Pearl S. Buck (psbi.org) estate house is located at 520 Dublin Road, Perkasie, PA 18944; phone 215-249-0100 ext. 110. Please note, there will be a special Open House tour December 13 from 6 pm to 8 pm.
The Ukrainian Museum in New York was "the" place to be on Friday evening, November 4, as the Museum held its first YM@UM (Young Members at The Ukrainian Museum) event, specifically for young adults aged 21 to 40.
Organized to introduce young adults to the Museum and its many exhibits and programs, the event attracted more than 55 attendees, the majority of whom became new members.
With music selected by DJ Matej Liteplo playing in the background, and surrounded by the art and culture of their ancestral heritage, guests mingled, reconnected with old friends, made new acquaintances, and feasted on a scrumptious buffet with many items provided by the East Village Meat Market and the Cloisters restaurant. New members received a voucher for the Veselka restaurant on the trendy Bowery as well as a raffle ticket; among the prizes: dinner for two at Soyuzivka (donated by the Ukrainian National Association) and gift certificates for Starbucks, Veselka, and the East Village Meat Market.
Among the highlights of the evening were guided tours of two of the Museum's exhibitions – Invitation to a Wedding: Ukrainian Wedding Textiles and Traditions and The Worlds of Sviatoslav Hordynsky.
Throughout the evening, the Museum's director, Maria Shust, the president of the Board of Trustees, Mykola Darmochwal, and several trustees and members of the Board's Public Relations and Membership committees circulated among the attendees, answering a wide range of questions. They were also pleased to hear so much positive feedback.
Katria Misilo, for example, said, "It's nice to have a group at the UM for us to get together, have fun, and support our culture."
Lida Doll felt that it's important to know what you're getting for your membership – and the UM offers a lot, including fascinating exhibits and great raffle prizes. (Among the many benefits of membership: discounted admission to future YM@UM events; free admission to exhibitions; invitations to members-only previews, openings, and other special events; reduced rates for film screenings, concerts, lectures, workshops, etc.; and a 10% discount on all gift shop purchases).
A young man from Brooklyn said he was moved by a Hordynsky painting and felt it truly spoke to his soul.
On her Facebook page, Larissa Nycz Montecuollo later wrote: "It's great that the UM is taking steps to reach our younger generation; all of us are interested in participating within the Ukrainian community, and the Young Members evening gave us an opportunity to visit the Museum, tour the current exhibitions, and catch up with friends. It was a great time, and I look forward to another YM@UM evening soon."
Indeed, everyone left the YM@UM event pleased and excited about the prospect of more events in the future. Many headed to the Veselka Bowery to redeem their vouchers for one of the newly opened restaurant's signature cocktails.
The YM@UM inaugural event was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Lewko of Little Falls, New Jersey, and UNWLA Branch 131 in Hillsboro, New Jersey.
